DeKalb County authorities investigate murder

ASBURY, AL (WAFF) - What started out as a fire death in DeKalb County over the weekend is now a murder.

Sheriff's officials had their questions after getting to the scene Sunday, but now a preliminary autopsy report has them looking for a killer.

Burt's body was found Sunday afternoon by a friend visiting his house on County Road 58.

Authorities say the murderer tried to cover the death by setting a fire.

Geraldine Fire Department responded, checked the house for fire and cleared the smoke.

Medical personnel and Coroner Tom Wilson pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

DeKalb County Investigators and Deputy State Fire Marshals processed the scene.

The body was removed and sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville for an autopsy to determine the cause of death and to make positive identifications.

Now, they say autopsy results indicate Burt was murdered.

Sheriff Jimmy Harris declined to comment on the mode of death but believes Burt was robbed for money and prescription drugs.

Harris says they believe Burt knew the person who killed him.

"We feel like this is somebody that knew him. He had a lot of friends that came by. A lot of people from Marshall County, DeKalb County. I don't feel like anybody in the neighborhood should be concerned," said DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris.

The case is being pursued as a homicide.

Officials say they do not have a suspect in the case but there are persons of interest.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department.
