UNA PLACES TEN ON ACADEMIC ALL-GSC SPRING TEAMS BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The University of North Alabama placed ten student-athletes on the 2010 Gulf South Conference All-Academic teams, led by four members of the UNA baseball team.
The Lions were represented on the Academic All-GSC baseball squad by senior outfielder Ross Parker, senior pitcher Mitch Handley, junior pitcher Patrick Hinton and junior pitcher Trey Mitchell. Handley was a second-team All-GSC pick this season and was also an Academic All-GSC selection in 2009. Mitchell was also chosen second-team All-GSC for his performance on the field.
Senior All-American and GSC individual champion Brett Munson, and sophomore All-GSC selection Jake Greer were named to the Academic All-GSC golf team.
UNA sophomore Kathryn Young was chosen for Academic All-GSC softball honors. She also earned second-team All-GSC honors on the field.
In tennis, UNA was represented on the Academic All-GSC Men's team by senior Jan Miskos. Senior Lenka Hola and sophomore Victoria Rees were named to the Academic All-GSC Women's Tennis squad. All three were previously also named first-team All-GSC.
In all, seventy nine student-athletes, including seven three-time selections and
16 other repeat All-Academic
members, were selected: baseball (24), men's golf (7), women's golf (4), softball (20), men's tennis (11) and women's tennis (13).
The Spring All-Academic Team is selected by the Gulf South Conference Sports Information Directors
(SIDs) and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FARs) in a joint vote. Nominated student-athletes must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.20 or better on a 4.00 scale for their entire academic career and may not be freshmen or first-semester or quarter transfers. The student-athlete must be a significant contributor to the squad. Other factors include leadership, community service and extra-curricular activities. SIDs and FARs are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions normally involved in the playing of that sport. Ties are not broken.
