CLEVELAND, Miss. - The 2010 season drew to a close on Wednesday morning for the Alabama-Huntsville baseball team, as the Chargers dropped an 8-3 decision to West Florida in an elimination game in the Gulf South Conference Tournament held at Ferriss Field in Cleveland, Miss.
The GSC East Division Champ Argonauts took an early 2-0 lead with a run in the first and another tally in the third before the Chargers tied things up with one swing of the bat on a long ball by senior right fielder Bradley Ray (Birmingham) that plated a pair of runs. The homer was Ray's second of the tournament and drove in senior first baseman Ryan McCrory (Mobile), who had doubled earlier in the frame.
West Florida answered right back with a run in the bottom of the frame to retake the lead taking advantage of an error and wild pitch to score. UWF then added a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to push the lead to 5-2. The Chargers cut the lead to 5-3 in the seventh with a lone run on an RBI single by Ray that scored sophomore shortstop Cory Trapp (Russellville), who singled earlier in the stanza and moved into scoring position on a McCrory single.
That is as close as the Chargers would come to advancing however as the Argos added three runs in the seventh and a run in the eighth to put the game away.
Sophomore Ryan Griffin (Athens) took the loss on the hill for the Chargers going six and one-thirds innings. UWF tagged Griffin for four earned runs and eight hits while he issued three strikeouts and walked none.
With the loss, the Chargers are eliminated from the GSC Tournament and finish the season 27-18.
