WILSON, N.C. – Defending NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional champion North Alabama struggled in the opening round of the 2010 regional and stands in 12th place in the 20-team event. Standing at 10-over-par, the Lions are 12 strokes behind tournament leader Lander at -2. Barry is the only other team shooting under par in the first round at -1.
Following Barry are Nova Southeastern (+1), St. Leo (+4), Lynn (+5), Valdosta State (+7), Queens-Charlotte (+7), Florida Southern (+8), Columbus State (+8), Georgia College (+8), Belmont Abbey (+9) and UNA and Barton College at +10.
Brett Munson led UNA's efforts in the opening round with an even par 71. He is tied for 11th individually. Alex Hirai was one-over-par at 72, while Tyler Ekenberg shot a 74 and Andrew Freeman a 77. Defending region individual champion Jake Greer struggled throughout the round and finished 10-over-par at 81.
The tournament continues on Tuesday and Wednesday as the Lions will try to fight their way back in to one of the top six spots to advance to the Division II National Championship Tournament in Indianapolis, Ind., on May 18-21.
