HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A rape investigation is underway in Huntsville.
Police said the assault happened around 1 a.m. on the 4000 block of Pulaski Pike in Northwest Huntsville.
The victim is an underage girl.
The disturbing attack was unsettling for many women in the neighborhood, who said they're going to be extra cautious from now on.
"Nice neighbors" and "a quiet community" are how residents describe the 4000 block of Pulaski Pike.
It's a block that 81-year-old Virginia Glenn often rides along in her scooter.
"I have no fear of this community at all, none," Glenn said.
But police said early Sunday morning, a 14-year-old girl reported being raped by a Hispanic male while she was asleep in her bed.
Investigators said the man ran off after the victim woke up and began screaming.
Police are not sure how the man got into the house.
Glenn said even though she feels safe in her neighborhood, she always makes sure her doors and windows are locked.
"You better watch out for things like that," she said. "Yes, you better watch out for things like that."
News of the rape put other neighbors on edge.
"I wouldn't expect it around here, that, that kind of blows my mind," said Shannon Stadler, who moved to the area just a few months ago.
She said she hadn't been concerned about her new block, until now.
"It kind of makes me scared myself now, just for being a woman period," Stadler said. "It's not something that you want to deal with, especially in your own home."
Police said the suspect got away in a red Ford Mustang.
