UNA Headed to NCAA Golf Regional

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind -- The University of North Alabama men's golf team will begin defense of its 2009 NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional crown on May 3 in Wilson, N.C.

UNA is one of 80 teams selected for NCAA regional competition, along with 32 student-athletes who will play as individuals. The regional competitions will be conducted May 3-5.

The top five teams and the top two student-athletes not with a team from each regional (regardless of region) will advance to the finals May 18-21 at The Sagamore Club in Noblesville, Ind. The finals will be hosted by the Indiana Sports Corporation, the University of Indianapolis, the Great Lakes Valley Conference and the Hamilton County Sports Authority.

UNA hosted and won the 2009 regional to advance on to the Division II National Tournament for the ninth time in school history and fourth straight year. The Lions also won regional championships in 2002, 2003 and 2007.

The combined South/Southeast Regionally is annually considered by far the toughest in the nation. This year will be no different as the regional will include seven of the Top 10 nationally ranked teams in Division II. This year's UNA team enters the regional tournament ranked No. 5 nationally by Golfstat with a 72.92 adjusted scoring average. Other ranked teams in the regional include Georgia College (No.2), Barry (No.3), Florida Southern (No.4), Belmont-Abbey (No. 7), Lander (No.8) and Lynn (No. 9).

North Alabama has won its last three tournaments leading into the regional, taking titles at the UNA Spring Classic, the Natural Classic in Arkansas and the Gulf South Conference Championships.

Individually, UNA senior Brett Munson of Louisville, Ky., won the GSC individual medalist honors and was selected GSC Golfer of the Year. He is also ranked 16th nationally on the Golfstat Cup standings, which includes every golfer at every institution on every level of NCAA play. He is the top ranked Division II golfer with a 70.42 scoring average.

Also leading the way for the Lions is sophomore Jake Greer of Birmingham, Ala. Greer won medalist honors at the 2009 regional and received the Mickelson Award as the top Division II Freshman Golfer in 2009. Greer finished second at this year's GSC championships.
