Alabama man held in Grand Rapids-area sex assaults

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - A 58-year-old suspect in sexual assaults committed more than a quarter-century ago in the Grand Rapids area is in custody.

Russell Allen Vane, who has lived in Cullman, Ala., since 1982, was arrested last week.

He is jailed in Kent County on a $1.3 million bond on one count of first-degree, three counts of second-degree and one count of third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 29. Michigan State Police Detective Sgt. Sally Wolters said during a Thursday news conference that Vane is a suspect in at least 12 sexual assaults of women and girls as young as 4 between 1977 and 1982.

She says the statute of limitations allows only five cases to be prosecuted. Jail records don't indicate whether Vane has an attorney.

David: Showers and storms ongoing across the Valley

    Saturday, March 25 2017 5:50 PM EDT2017-03-25 21:50:37 GMT

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
