FLORENCE --For the 12th time this season the University of North Alabama baseball team couldn't complete a double-header sweep as the Lions downed Ouachita Baptist 5-3 in the first game Tuesday but dropped the nightcap 9-3.
With the split UNA is now 25-21 overall. Ouachita Baptist is 22-23.
UNA got all the runs it needed in a four-run second inning in the opener. OBU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but the Lions answered with four. Jared Mothershed doubled and scored on a Chase Porch single. Kevin Williams followed with a two-run home run and Dewayne Gunn reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a passed ball.
North Alabama added a run in the fourth on a Jacob Lamar single and Blake Stroth RBI double. The Tigers got a run in the sixth but reliever Neil Brown struckout Cass Vila with the bases loaded to end the threat. Drew Clark (4-2) got the win for UNA, allowing three runs on five hits over five innings.
In the second game UNA fell behind 3-0 and 4-1 but chipped away to cut OBU's lead to 4-3 in the fifth inning. The Tigers scoed five runs in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Kevin Henry (2-10 took the loss for UNA, giving up four runs on five hits over 4 2/3 innings. Only one of OBU's runs off Henry were earned.
North Alabama was out-hit 10-7 in the second game.
The Lions host Alabama-Huntsvillle Saturday and Sunday in their final Gulf South Conference series of the season. Saturday's double-header begins at 1 p.m.
