DECATUR, AL (WAFF) - Decatur police officers arrested one of their own for allegedly assaulting his estranged wife.
Monday night officers responded to a domestic violence call on Rutledge Street S.W.
An officer met with the victim who said her estranged husband, Mitchell Breland, a Decatur Police Officer, assaulted her and pointed a rifle at her head.
Police said the victim had injuries to her chin and neck, supporting her allegations.
After officers interviewed Breland, they arrested him and charged him with third degree domestic violence.
The charge is a misdemeanor.
Breland was transported to the Decatur City Jail and is being held in lieu of a $500.00 bond.
Officer Breland resigned his position as a patrolman with the Decatur Police Department Tuesday afternoon.
Officer Breland had been with the department for about two and a half years.
