DECATUR – The University of North Alabama softball team got off to a good start Thursday at the Gulf South Conference Crossover with a 3-1 victory over Arkansas Tech. Emily Barnes and Jennifer Sharp each went 2-for-3 with an RBI on the day as the Lions improved to 19-22 on the year with a 6-9 mark in GSC play.
After the Cottom Blossoms scored their lone run in the top of the first inning, UNA answered in the bottom of the frame. An RBI-single by Sharp scored Barnes from second base to tie the score at 1-1.
The Lions used the long ball to add two more runs. Solo home runs by Andrea Palmer in the bottom of the third inning and Barnes in the fifth gave UNA a 3-1 lead.
Jennifer Sexton (12-11) recorded the pitching victory after scattering four hits over seven innings of work. She added six strikeouts on the day with only two walks.
North Alabama will remain at Decatur's Wilson Morgan Park for a pair of games on Friday. The Lions will take on Southern Arkansas at 2 p.m. and Henderson State at 4 p.m. Live stats for each game can be found on the softball page at www.roarlions.com.
