AUBURN, Ala. – The No. 37 Auburn men's tennis team travels to the state of Mississippi for two SEC weekend matches. The Tigers take on Ole Miss at 2 p.m. in Oxford on Friday and then head to Starkville for a 1 p.m. match against Mississippi State on Sunday.
"We're coming off a good weekend, picking up two key SEC wins at home," head coach Eric Shore said. "Looking at this weekend against Ole Miss and Mississippi State, it's going to be a tough weekend on the road. Sunday's match against Mississippi State will be big for us and we hope to play well against Ole Miss on Friday."
Ole Miss holds a 28-24 series lead over the Tigers and took a 6-1 victory over Auburn last season. Auburn has a slim 20-19 advantage over Mississippi State in a series that had the two teams meet twice last year. The Bulldogs topped the Tigers during the regular season, 4-3, but Auburn defeated Mississippi State in the first round of the SEC Tournament by a score of 4-1.
Against Arkansas & LSU
Auburn picked up two key SEC wins this past weekend at the City of Auburn/Auburn University Tennis Center. The Tigers opened with a 4-3 thriller on Friday evening, defeating Arkansas. In the final match of the evening, freshman Tim Hewitt put together a three-set victory at No.
2 singles to give Auburn the win. On Sunday afternoon, Auburn took on LSU and came away with a 5-2 win. Hewitt, freshman Lucas Lopasso and sophomore Alex Stamchev each recorded two singles victories on the weekend.
In The SEC
Auburn currently stands at 8-9 overall and 4-4 in the Southeastern Conference. The team's conference marks has them tied for first place in the SEC West with Ole Miss. Three SEC East teams still remain undefeated in the conference in Tennessee (8-0), Georgia (8-0) and Florida (7-0).
In The Rankings
The Tigers continue to climb through the rankings, jumping to No. 37 this week after concluding last week at No. 45 in the country. Junior Tim Puetz and sophomore Alex Stamchev continue to hold the No. 10 spot in doubles competition, while Puetz is No. 20 and Stamchev sits at No.
107 in singles play.
Ole Miss Rebels
The Ole Miss Rebels enter the weekend with a 13-5 overall mark and a
4-4 record in conference play.
The 17th-ranked team traveled to Knoxville, Tenn., on April 12 for a SEC matchup with the Tennessee Volunteers and fell to the Volunteers by a score of 7-0. The Rebels then headed to Athens, Ga., for a face-off with Georgia. Ole Miss dropped a 5-2 decision to the Bulldogs. Ole Miss has a pair of student-athletes ranked nationally in singles competition.
Sophomore Marcel Thiemann is ranked No. 68 overall and junior Tucker Vorster is the 76th-ranked player in the country.
Mississippi State Bulldogs
The No. 55 Mississippi State Bulldogs (8-9, 1-6 SEC) also traveled to Athens and Knoxville this past weekend to battle against Georgia and Tennessee. At Athens on Friday, Mississippi State was defeated 5-2 and then lost to the Volunteers on Sunday by the same score. Mississippi State is led by No. 67 Louis Cant and No. 125 George Coupland.
Auburn is set to close out the regular season against cross-state rival Alabama April 17th in Tuscaloosa. The match up is set for 5 p.m. at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium.
