MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- After nine straight double-headers without a sweep, the University of North Alabama finally put two games together Wednesday, downing Montevallo 13-2 and 5-4. It was UNA's first sweep since taking two from Harding back on February 23. The Lions have split eight double-headers since and were swept in one.
The two wins also put the Lions back above .500 for the season at 19-17 as they begin a stretch run that will include nine Gulf South Conference games.
In the opener UNA routed the Falcons with 18 hits and strong pitching from Will Rankin, Kevin Henry and Tyler Ferguson. UNA jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning and added five runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth. Montevallo scored its only two runs in the fourth off Rankin. Rankin (2-5) got the win, allowing just two runs on four hits in four innings. The Falcons got just three hits in three innings off UNA's relievers.
Six UNA players had multiple hits, led by Jared Mothershed, Chase Porch and Dewayne Gunn with three each.
In the nightcap, a solo home run by Jared Mothershed in the top of the seventh gave UNA the win. The Lions led 4-3 in the sixth before Montevallo tied the game going into the seventh. Mothershed's homer put UNA on top and Neil Brown came on to pitch a scoreless ninth to earn his first save of the season. UNA starter Drew Clark did not get a decision, allowing four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings of work. Casey Jones got the final two outs in the sixth and earned his second win of the season. Mothershed, Gunn and Kevin Williams had two hits each to lead the Lions.
North Alabama plays a pivotal three-game Gulf South Conference series at home this Saturday and Sunday with games beginning at 1 p.m. each day.
