FLORENCE -- After rallying to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, the University of North Alabama almost let a win slip away, allowing two Christian Brothers runs in the ninth before closing the books on a 6-5 win.
With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the eighth, UNA had two outs and no one on base when Josh Cyr singled. Drew Humphrey ran for him and went to third on a Dewayne Gunn single. Humprey then gave North Alabama a 4-3 lead when he scored on an errant throw by the CBU catcher. A Williams single drove in Gunn to make it 5-3. The next three batters walked and the walk to Ross Parker forced in UNA's final run.
CBU made it interesting in the ninth off UNA reliever Patrick Hinton. With one out, Hinton walked back-to-back batters and Joseph Kaminski doubled in two runs to make it 6-5. Hinton then struckout Anthony Apro and Chase Ruggeroli to end the game.
A Kevin Williams single, followed by a two-run Jared Mothershed home run gave UNA a 2-0 lead in the second inning. CBU scored an unearned run in the third off UNA starter Mitch Handley to make it 2-1, but a solo blast by Dewayne Gunn in the fourth extended UNA's lead to 3-1. UNA reliever Trey Mitchell pitched three scoreless innings and left with UNA still ahead 3-1.
Casey Jones came on to pitch for the Lions in the seventh and allowed two runs on two hits, one walk and three hit batters in one inning.
Hinton (5-1) got the win for UNA, despite allowing two runs on three hits in two innings.
