JSU Women’s Tennis Edges UT Martin, 4-3

JACKSONVILLE – Viviane Marani won a three-set match at No. 1 singles to give Jacksonville State a 4-3 win over UT Martin on Tuesday at the JSU Tennis Courts.

The Skyhawks held a 3-2 lead before Ralphaela Wenzel defeated Johanie Van Zyl, 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 to tie the match. Marani lost the first set 7-6 but rallied to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the match.

UT Martin jumped out to a 1-0 lead by sweeping all thee doubles matches to win the doubles point and later held a 2-0. Martina Dessbesell defeated Martie Wahl, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 and Kristen Fuller upended Anna Marie Herbold 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 to tie the match 2-2.

It was the fifth straight win for the Gamecocks, improving to 11-8 overall and 7-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Skyhawks fell to 8-5, 5-2 in conference play.

Jacksonville State is back in action against Mercer University at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at the JSU Tennis Courts.
