UAH baseball bids farewell to Joe Davis Stadium with win

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - Behind a five-run first inning, the Alabama-Huntsville bid farewell to Huntsville's Joe Davis Stadium earning the series win with a 8-5 victory over Lambuth on Saturday afternoon.

The Chargers got things rolling early with a five-run bottom of the first.  Junior left fielder Corey Whittle (Cullman) and third baseman Jordan Parker (Hartselle) ledoff the contest with back-to-back singles setting the table for senior first baseman Ryan McCrory (Mobile), who sent a towering shot into the pine trees past the right field wall for his ninth homer of the season.  A single to right by senior second baseman Nick Huckaby (Jamestown, Ky.) set the stage for senior designated hitter Josh Bolan (Decatur), who launched a blast to left center for his first career home run making it a 5-0 game.

UAH added on a run in the fourth cashing in on a pair of defensive miscues by the Eagles. Centerfielder Jeremy Dorrence (Decatur) drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on a passed ball before coming home to score on an overthrow of a ball to short by Whittle.

The Eagles bats came to life in the fifth pushing across three runs to make it a 6-3 contest but UAH came right back with a run in the bottom to make it a four-run advantage.  Senior right fielder Bradley Ray (Birmingham) ledoff the frame with a double to right center before moving up to third on a Huckaby groundout.  Bolan then hit a sacrifice fly to deep center that brought Ray home easily from third.

A homer by Lambuth in the sixth cut it back to three runs but the Chargers countered right back with a run of their own. When Whittle doubled down the right field line bringing home sophomore shortstop Corey Trapp (Russellville), who drew a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position on a bunt by Dorrence.

A Lambuth home run in the seventh by Bart White then cut the lead back to three runs but that is as close as the Eagles would come.

Sophomore Ryan Griffin (Athens) got the start on the hill for UAH going four and one-thirds innings on five hits and a pair of walks while striking out five.  Senior Jacob Wray (Hartselle) came on in relief of Griffin in the fifth and went two full innings to earn the win. The senior allowed two runs and two hits while walking one and fanning four.  Freshman Cody Barrett (Mufreesboro, Tenn.) and junior Jake Tubbs (Childersburg) both worked in relief before junior closer Dan Lazzaroni (Roswell, Ga.) worked the ninth to earn his fifth save of the season.

The Chargers are set to open play on the UAH campus for the first time on April 14th in a 2 p.m. contest against Miles.
