BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- The Samford University track and field team will split in two this weekend as it sends some student-athletes to Gainesville, Fla., to compete in the Pepsi Florida Relays and some to Auburn, Ala., to compete in the Tiger Track Classic. Both meets are two-day events held on Friday and Saturday.
"We would have loved to have taken the full squad to Florida," Samford Head Coach Rod Tiffin said, "but the fields were limited to a certain number of athletes. Auburn was nice enough to allow us to bring a few athletes that need a little work so we are hoping for an exciting weekend from both meets."
The Samford field competing at the Pepsi Florida Relays consists of nine men and four women.
Cavan Corcoran will compete in the 110-meter hurdles at 12:45 p.m. on Friday for the men while Lauren D'Alessio will try her hand at the 800-meter run for the first time at 2:55 p.m. Then Morgan Tyler will run the 400-meter hurdles for the women at 3:45 p.m. on Friday followed by Donald Cooper and Chas Keithan in the men's event.
Hillary Neal looks to build on her second place performance from the Alabama Relays last weekend in the 1500 meters at 6:30 p.m. Meanwhile, Cameron Bean and Blaise Carie will take on the steeplechase.
Thomas Oliver and Ryland Robbins will start Saturday off with the javelin at 11:30 a.m. Michael Seaman and Patrick Wells will then take on possibly their largest field of competition so far this season in the pole vault. Jessica Lucas will round out Samford's field competition with the women's javelin at 1:30 p.m.
The Samford women will also compete in the 4x200, 4x400 and distance medley relays. The men will take part in the 4x400, 4x110-meter shuttle hurdle and 4x800-meter relays. All relays begin at 12 p.m. and will run through 7:05 p.m.
Thirteen other Samford athletes will compete in the Tiger Track Classic at The Hutsell-Rosen Track on the Auburn University campus including nine women and four men. The only events on Friday will be the javelin and hammer throw, both beginning at 4:30 p.m. CT. The rest of the events will take place on Saturday, with field events starting at 11 a.m. and running events beginning at 12 p.m. The meet is slated to conclude at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.
