HANCEVILLE – Pinch-hitter Brian Wheeler delivered a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth to propel Wallace State's baseball team to a 4-2 victory over Lindenwood College (Mo.) in a seven-inning affair at James C. Bailey Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Wheeler's two-run single scored Charlie Esskuchen and Michael Meredith and helped push the Lions record to 18-12.
"It was a big pinch hit. Brian has struggled recently after a hot start for us. He was into the game from the dugout the entire game, which is one reason I let him hit in that spot," said Wallace State coach Randy Putman. "I thought having shortstop Michael Meredith back from injury was a big spark for us as well."
Hunter Cross was the winning pitcher in relief for Wallace State, while Andrew Busby pitched a scoreless seventh for his second save.
Chase Mathis, Adam Russell, Cross and Busby combined to pitch five scoreless innings out of the bullpen after starter Gil Walker surrendered two unearned runs in the first inning.
Jesse Carroll was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Lions, Esskuchen had a single, walk and a run scored, Jonathan Brook contributed a single and a run and Dustin Hood added a hit.
The series resumes Wednesday with another seven-inning game beginning at 4 p.m.
