CROSSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - DeKalb County Sheriff's deputies arrested a woman on theft of deception charges.

Officials said six victims in the Crossville area loaned money to a woman who did not repay the loans.

They said 62-year-old Sylvia Turner Bowman of Albertville solicited elderly people for amounts ranging from $100 to $7,000.

The victims reported Bowman asked them to loan her the money, claiming she would repay them when her insurance claim was settled.

Police said the insurance claim stemmed from a May, 2004 fire in her Albertville restaurant. The claim had actually been denied because the fire was an arson set by her business partner and part-owner of the restaurant.

A warrant was issued on the charge of theft by deception.

The Albertville Police Department's detective and patrol divisions assisted in the search for Bowman, who was located early Thursday morning and taken into custody.

She was then transported to the DeKalb County Jail.

"We appreciate the cooperation we received from the Albertville Police Department.  Without their assistance we would not have been so successful in quickly locating Bowman and bringing this investigation to a close," Sheriff Jimmy Harris said. "I believe, however, that Mrs. Bowman may have many more victims, inside and outside of DeKalb County, who have not yet come forward.  We will not know the full amount of money lost until these unknown victims report their losses to our office.  If you feel that you have been victimized by this particular individual or another in a similar situation, please contact the Sheriff's Office."

Bowman remains in jail on one count of theft by deception, with a $15,000 bond.

Other victims' cases will be considered by the grand jury.
