PENSACOLA, Fla. -- Junior Trey Mitchell of Florence fired a no-hitter in the second game of a Gulf South Conference double-header against West Florida Saturday as the University of North Alabama split a pair of games with the Argonauts. West Florida won the opening game 6-2 before Mitchell no-hit the Argonauts in a 3-0 UNA win.
With the split, UNA is 14-12 overall but remains tied atop the GSC standings with Alabama-Huntsville at 3-2 in league play.
West Florida out-hit UNA 17-4 in the opener but the game was tied 2-2 in the seventh inning. UNA strarter Mitch Handley (3-2) took the loss, allowing six runs on 16 hits in 7 1/3 innings. UNA trailed 2-0 but scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to tie the game. West Florida scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead and added two more in the eighth.
In game two, UNA scored two runs in the second inning and added another in the seventh to back Mitchell. In the second Nick McGregor reached on a fielder's choice and Kevin Williams followed with a single. A Ross Parker singled scored McGregor and Williams scored on an error to make it 2-0. In the seventh Josh Cyr singled and Drew Humphrey came on to run for him. Dewayne Gunn and McGregor then had back-to-back singles to score Humphrey.
In his seven innings on the mound, Mitchell allowed no runs on no hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Mitchell's no-hitter was the first for a UNA pitcher since Mike Colacchio no-hit West Georgia on March 20, 2004. Mitchell's no-hitter is also just the third ever thrown by a UNA pitcher in Gulf South Conference play.
The Lions and Argonauts will play the final game of the three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
