Chargers advance to CHA Championship behind 1-0 shutout

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. Behind a 29-save shutout performance from junior netminder Cameron Talbot (Caledonia, Ontario), the Alabama-Huntsville (11-17-3) hockey team blanked Robert Morris (10-19-5) 1-0 in the opening round of the 2010 College Hockey America tournament on Friday afternoon in Niagara Univ., N.Y.

After the two clubs skated to a scoreless first period, the Chargers finally cracked open the scoring just past the midway point of the contest at 11:57 of the second when junior forward Neil Ruffini (Roswell, Ga.) tipped in a blast from senior blueliner Brennan Barker (Long Sault, Ontario).  The power-play maker was also assisted by freshman winger Keenan Desmet (Strathmore, Alberta).

From that point on it would be the UAH defense and Talbot that would shut down the Colonial's attack including four RMU power-plays.  Ranked ninth in the country in shutting down opponent's power plays, the Charger penalty-killing unit continued it solid play blanking the Colonials in all seven attempts.

Talbots 29 saves earned him the win in net and only the second 1-0 shutout in school history.  Ironically, Talbot owns the other one as well having blanked Yale 1-0 last season.  Brooks Ostergard took the loss in net for Robert Morris stopping 23 UAH attempts.

With the win, the Chargers advance to their sixth CHA championship contest will face Niagara. Saturday's championship will be played at 7 p.m. CST and televised nationally on CBS College Sports Television.
