BIRMINGHAM – The University of North Alabama softball team was able to sweep the weekly Gulf South Conference Pitcher- and Player-of-the-Week awards this week. Officials with the GSC named UNA senior Jennifer Sexton the East Division's Pitcher of the Week and junior Jennifer Sharp the Player of the Week.
Sexton earns the pitching honor for the second time in three weeks after tossing three complete games while picking up two wins and a save for the Lions. She allowed just two earned runs in 23 innings pitched (0.61 ERA) and struck out 33 hitters. In a 5-4 win over Georgia Southwestern, she did not allow an earned run and struck out 11. In her lone non-start of the week, she earned a two inning save in a win over Anderson. She got each of the six outs by strikeout.
Sharp was on point from the start of the West Georgia Invitational, hitting home runs in her first at-bat in three of the six games that all gave the Lions leads. For the week, the first baseman hit .375 with four home runs, five runs batted in, five runs scored and a slugging percentage of 1.188.
She was also flawless in the field in 41 chances. Her home runs against Augusta State and Florida Southern were the only runs UNA scored in those contests.
