JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State women's tennis team (6-5) moved its record above .500, earning its fifth straight win with a 7-0 sweep of Southern Illinois Edwardsville (1-10) at the JSU Tennis Courts on Sunday.
JSU swept the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles. Viviane Marani and Martina Dessbesell downed Maggie Boekman and Carli Connors 8-2 at No. 1. Raphaela Lima and Kimberly Ferris won 8-3 over Kelsey Laird and Laura Horning at No. 2 and Raphaela Wenzel and Julianna Renesto claimed an 8-3 win over Ali Wulfers and Amanda Niebur at No. 3.
The Gameoccks completed the sweep wins at all six singles positions. Marani beat Conners, 7-6, 6-4 at No. 1 and Dessbesell won 6-2, 6-2 over Boeckman at the No. 2 spot. Renesto beat Laura Horning 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 while Ferris earned a 6-4, 6-0 win over Laird at No. 4. Wenzel defeated Wulfers 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 and Lima beat Niebur 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
The Gamecocks are back in action against Shorter College at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the JSU Tennis Courts.
