Alabama-Huntsville baseball tops Martin Methodist

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. -- With a late-inning rally, the Alabama-Huntsville (7-5) baseball team came from behind to top Martin Methodist (5-9) 7-6 on Thursday afternoon at Huntsville's Joe Davis Stadium.

The Redhawks jumped on the scoreboard first plating a run in the first inning off Charger starter Eric Parker (Priceville) before UAH responded with a run in the bottom of the frame for a 1-1 contest thanks to a pair of Martin Methodist errors.

A 2-run bomb by Martin Methodist's Kyle Bowers put the Redhawks out in front 3-1 before the Chargers countered right back with a pair in the bottom of the third.  Back-to-back walks by junior left fielder Corey Whittle (Cullman) and junior third baseman Jordan Parker (Hartselle) to leadoff the inning got the rally going.  The Redhawks' third error of the game allowed senior first baseman Ryan McCrory (Mobile) to load the bases.  A pair of fielder's choices by senior designated hitter Jerome Dunning (Montgomery) and senior second baseman Nick Huckaby (Jamestown, Ky.) drove in the two runs by UAH.

A two-run top of the fourth followed by a run in the fifth put the Redhawks out to their biggest lead of the afternoon but the Chargers would start clawing their way back into the contest in the sixth.  Another Martin Methodist error and a two-out walk put a runner in scoring position for UAH and Whittle delievered a single to left that scored sophomore Corey Trapp (Russellville) to make it a 6-4 contest.

The seventh inning saw the Chargers load the bases again with no out as McCrory reached on error, junior pinch hitter Byne Gooden (Millbrook) singled to short and Huckaby walked.  A deep fly ball by senior centerfielder Jeremy Dorrence (Decatur) brought McCrory home before a groundout by senior catcher Chris Parkman (Raleigh, Miss.) pulled UAH even at 6-6 as Huckaby scored.

Small ball led to the game-winning run for the Chargers as senior right fielder Bradley Ray (Birmingham) ledoff the stanza with a single to center before Whittle put a bunt down to the left of the mound moving Ray into scoring position.  Jordan Parker then singled through the right side to bring Ray home to score and give the Chargers a 7-6 lead.

UAH junior closer Dan Lazzaroni (Roswell, Ga.) came on in the ninth and notched his fourth save of the year allowing one walk.

Senior Jacob Wray (Hartselle) picked up the win working the eighth inning allowing one walk.  Senior southpaw Shawn Herring (Florence) and Lance Gibson (Toxey) also worked in relief.
