Alabama-Huntsville baseball drops pair at No. 13 Delta State

CLEVELAND, Miss. -- Despite holding a pair of late leads, the Alabama-Huntsville (3-5) baseball team came away empty handed on Wednesday afternoon against No. 13 Delta State falling 10-8 and 4-3 to the Statesmen in Cleveland, Miss.

Things looked great for the Chargers in game one as UAH jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first two and a half innings but the Statesmen would rally outscoring the Chargers 10-1 the rest of the way.  UAH opened up the game with a four-run first highlighted by a pair of doubles by senior designated hitter Jerome Dunning (Montgomery) and senior right fielder Bradley Ray (Birmingham).

Dunning's second double of the afternoon led to the fifth run in game one as senior first baseman Ryan McCrory (Mobile) scored all the way from first to make it a 5-0 contest.  Dunning then moved up to third and scored himself on a wild pitch to make it a six-run margin.  UAH went on to the seven-run advantage in the top of the third on an RBI single by junior third baseman Jordan Parker (Hartselle) that plated senior centerfielder Jeremy Dorrence (Decatur).

The Statesmen quickly roared back with three runs in the bottom of the third and four in the fourth to erase the deficit and reset the slate.  A one-out walk by sophomore shortstop Corey Trapp (Russellville) and a double by Dorrence set the table and Trapp would regain the lead for the Chargers coming in to score on a botched throw by Delta State catcher Patrick Taylor.

The lead would not hold however, as Delta State pushed across three runs on four hits to make it a 10-8 contest.

Eric Parker (Priceville), Jacob Wray (Hartselle), Jake Tubbs (Childersburg), Corbin Holland (Gadsden) and Shawn Herring (Florence) all worked on the mound in the seven-inning contest with Herring taking the loss.

The nightcap saw the Statesmen jump out in front early with two runs in the first three innings before the Chargers got on the board with a pair in the fourth.  Senior second baseman Nick Huckaby (Jamestown, Ky.) and Dorrence got a two-out rally going for UAH with a single and double respectively.  Senior catcher Chris Parkman (Raleigh, Miss.) launched a two-out double to bring Huckaby and Dorrence and knot the game at two.

UAH took their first lead of the game in the fifth inning as Ray came home on a single by Parker after Ray ledoff the frame with a double.  The lead was short-lived however, as Delta State pushed across a run in the bottom of the frame and retook the lead in the sixth making it a 4-3 contest.

Lance Gibson (Toxey), Taylor Scott (Franklin, Tenn.), Cody Barrett (Mufreesboro, Tenn.), Jermaine Barksdale (Carlsbad, N.M.) and Dan Lazzaroni (Roswell, Ga.) each worked from the hill with Barrett taking the loss.

The Chargers are slated to finally open home play this weekend hosting Stillman on Saturday and Sunday.  First pitch is slated for Noon both days at Joe Davis Stadium
