Samford will square off against UNO, Troy and Gadsden State this weekend

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Samford University men's tennis team will continue play in its 2010 spring season Thursday at 2:30 p.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs welcome the University of New Orleans (UNO) Privateers to the Samford Tennis Center for a non-conference showdown.

Thursday's match will be the first of three contests for Samford (1-1) this weekend. Following their match against UNO, the Bulldogs will play at Troy on Friday and then host Gadsden on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Samford heads into Thursday's match with a 1-1 record. The Bulldogs opened their spring dual-match season Saturday and split a doubleheader against Georgia State and Columbus State. In its season-opener, Samford dropped a 7-0 decision to Georgia State, but then bounced back for a thrilling 4-3 victory against Columbus State.

UNO will be playing its first dual match of the season Thursday. The Privateers were initially scheduled to open their 2010 campaign Friday, but their meeting against Jackson State was postponed due to rain.

Last season, Samford and UNO squared off in New Orleans, La., and the Bulldogs rallied for a 4-3 win. In its 2009 victory, Samford earned the doubles point and received singles victories from Carson Kadi, Carl Abalos and Oliver Reynolds.

The Bulldogs win against UNO last season came down to the final singles match. With the score deadlocked at 3-3, the attention shifted to the No. 3 singles court where Samford's Kadi rallied from a set down to defeat UNO's Ben Smith 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. The victory sealed the Bulldogs' win and Kadi improved his team-leading singles record to 4-2.

Besides the victory by Kadi, Samford picked up wins at court No. 4 by Abalos and at No. 6 by Reynolds.

The Bulldogs' Abalos defeated Guilherme Rebolo, 6-3, 6-4, and then Reynolds knocked off Oliver Cuthill, 6-3, 6-2. The loss for Cuthill was his first in six matches at No. 6.

In doubles play, Samford won on courts No. 1 and No. 2 to take an early 1-0 lead in the match. On court No. 1, the Bulldogs' Brian Dushock and Kelwin DeWet defeated the Privateers' combination of Calvin Kemp and Rebolo, 9-8 (6), while Reynolds and Abalos knocked off UNO's Cuthill and Smith 8-5 on court No. 2.

Following Thursday's home match against UNO, the Samford men's tennis team will next be in action Friday at 2 p.m. (CST) as the Bulldogs travel to Troy for an in-state duel to be held at the Lunsford Tennis Complex in Troy, Ala.
