Some young athletes hit the hardwood for a special Olympics basketball tournament today.
The opening ceremony for the 22nd annual event kicked off at the Fern Bell Recreation Center this morning.
Then the special Olympians suited up for some five-on-five.
Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle was in attendance and spoke to us about the importance of the city hosting these events.
"This is one of the greatest events because they get to come out and compete like everybody else. All their life they've seen people competing and this is there chance to be part of Olympic history," said Battle
13 teams gathered for today's event, the furthest coming all the way from Talladega.
The players ranged in age from 13 to 23.
