To either keep or fire Carol Wicks as Director of Animal Services will be a decision made by the city council. If it comes to that, it would be put on a Decatur City Council meeting agenda for further review. So far, it is not on the agenda for their next meeting on Sep 2. If the issue comes before the city council, that's when we hope to find out why Mayor Kyle decided to put Wicks on paid administrative leave. He will not comment on it, saying he cannot talk about a pending personnel issue. DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -  Former UA Huntsville professor Andrew Pakhomov went to prison Thursday after being sentenced to 45 years for killing his wife, Yelena Zakin.

Prosecutor Wesley Lavender talked with WAFF 48 News about the sentencing.

"We're good, we're satisfied," Lavender said. "I'm never really satisfied with sentencing, but this is the range of what we expected."

During testimony, Pakhomov's son and a former student testified on his behalf. But the victim's daughter, Alexsandra Zakin, told the court about what she is missing in her life with the death of her mother.

"She has already has missed some special events," Zakin said. "She missed my college graduation. She won't be there for my wedding. She won't get to know her own grandchildren, and it's just something that's hard to think about. Every day i live with that. I'll never get her back."

Shortly after the sentencing, defense attorney Robert Tuten gave notice of appeal and a motion for a new trial.

"If you recall from the trial, the state's position was that the belt used to kill her belonged to Dr. Pakhomov," Tuten said. "That's what connected him to the crime. Our position was the investigators conducted a search of their home, they found his belt, hanging in his closet, so the one found with her body was not his."

Prosecutors said whether the belt was his or hers would not have affected the trial's outcome.
