HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -  Huntsville-based Avocent Corp. is being bought by a St. Louis-based company in a more than one billion dollar deal.

Emerson Electric Co. has agreed to buy Avocent for $1.2 billion in cash with the deal expected to close sometime around the first of the year

Avocent makes network equipment and software.  It is an acquisition Emerson says will offer its customers better technology and services for managing data centers.

"Combing Avocent's technologies, relationships and installed base with Emerson's power and colling presence allows us to offer a more compelling solution to our data center customers' most pressing challenge - energy efficiency," said David Farr, Emerson Chairman, CEO and President, in a news release.

An Emerson spokesman says Avocent's operations will remain in Huntsville after the sale is completed in early 2010.
