Man takes officers on chase in Morgan County

DECATUR, AL (WAFF) - Decatur Police have a man in custody after a chase that went up and down Morgan County.

Decatur Police officers noticed a Chevrolet Cobalt around 9:30 a.m. on Grant Street that had the music playing lound enough that it was in violation of the noise ordinance.

The officers then noticed that it was the same vehicle that was reported as stolen from Lynn Layton Chevrolet Thursday.

Officer Josh Wooten tried to initiated a traffic stop near 19th Avenue, but 32-year-old Michael Lacy Peterson of Athens failed to pull over and a high speed chase began.

The chase lasted for 45 minutes with speeds up to 120 mph. Multiple agencies were involved in the chase that covered parts of Southeast Decatur, Interstate 65, and Morgan County.

The chase ended near the Somerville Post Office after the Cobalt ran over several spike strips and a left rear tire came off.

No one was injured in the chase.

The driver, Peterson, has been charged with Reckless Endangerment, Attempting to Flee or Elude, Resisting Arrest, Driving While Revoked, and Violation of the Sound Control Ordinance.

A felony investigation is being conducted into the vehicle theft and felony charges are expected to be added against Peterson.
