ARDMORE, AL (WAFF) - One lucky lottery player won the big Powerball jackpot for Wednesday night's $259,900,000 grand prize.

The powerball website says the winning ticket was sold in South Carolina.

The winning numbers were 14-24-31-43-51 and the powerball was 27.

The quarter of a billion dollar prize had people lining up in Tennessee and the 29 other states that sell powerball tickets.

Powerball officials say 1,847,677 additional players won prizes totalling more than $20.1million.

The lottery for Saturday's drawing is now back down to $20 million.

Alabamians lined up at lottery vendors in Tennessee to try their luck at winning the state's $250 million Powerball.

Last Saturday the Powerball was at $213 million. There was no winner, so the pot went up by $37 million.

Lottery players were ready to buy their tickets before Stateline Lottery opened Wednesday morning. Most were interested in the Powerball jackpot --already at $245 million and growing.

Manager Chuck Dobbs credits Tennessee for having the lottery to help children go to school.

"Lots of the proceeds go to help kids go to college. Most of the money stays in Tennessee helps kids go to college. That's good for the state," said Dobbs.

Eighty percent of Dobbs' customer base is from Alabama.  Lottery players WAFF 48 News talked to say money they are spending in Tennessee on lottery tickets that should be kept at home. But because there seems to be no future in a statewide lottery, they travel over the state line to buy tickets and participate in big win drawings.

"Should of had it a long time ago I think," said player Eddie Turner. "People spend money to come across the line. Need to keep the money in Alabama, you know."

"We should have had the lottery 10 to 15 years ago," said another player.

Lottery numbers are announced on Wednesday and Saturday.

There's always the chance you will win some money by taking advantage of the state's scratch off cards.
