DNA tests negative on Arthur, fellow inmate

Posted: Updated:

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WAFF) - It was revealed in a Jefferson County courtroom Monday afternoon that tests didn't show either convicted killer Tommy Arthur or another potential suspect's DNA at the murder scene.

Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Teresa Pulliam was told DNA tests concluded that the material didn't come from Arthur or Bobby Ray Gilbert.

Arthur was convicted of killing Troy Wicker of Muscle Shoals back in 1983. He was scheduled for execution last month, but Gilbert came forward and confessed to the murder.

Gilbert is also in prison, and has a violent rap sheet including two murders, an escape and assault. In 1986, he was convicted of killing 62-year-old Walton Edison Brewer in DeKalb County. He was also convicted of stabbing a fellow inmate to death in 1990.

After Gilbert came forward, the court agreed to test DNA at the crime scene.

It was unknown late Tuesday afternoon what effect the test will have on Arthur's case.
