Death penalty sought in Christie Scott sentencing

Posted: Updated:

RUSSELLVILLE, Ala. (AP) - A prosecutor is asking for the death penalty for a Russellville woman convicted of capital murder in the arson death of her 6-year-old son.

A jury in Franklin County convicted Christine Michelle Scott of capital murder on Wednesday. The sentencing phase of the trial began Thursday.

Prosecutor Doug Evans told the jury that Scott deserves the death penalty for starting a fire at her home on Aug. 16 that killed her son, Mason. Prosecutors contend the 30-year-old woman started the fire to collect $175,000 in life insurance on her son.

Defense attorney Robert Tuten told jurors that life in prison without parole is a more appropriate punishment.
