SPRUCE PINE, AL (WAFF) - Franklin County sheriff's deputies discovered a meth lab and arrested more than half a dozen suspected drug users.

Seven people were arrested and charged at a location on County Road 20 in the Spruce Pine community of Franklin County, and investigators said it's uncommon to see that many arrested at one time for such a common offense.

Travis Waldecker sat on the front stoop of his brother's home Friday. He said he's still in disbelief that his brother Nathan was arrested at his home just across a dirt driveway Thursday evening.

"He's just with the wrong people," said Waldecker. "It's not how he's like. He's just like me. We enjoy life and play video games all the time."

But investigators said it wasn't a game that Nathan Waldecker and six other people were involved in that evening.

Nathan Waldecker, Anthony Pinkard, Lashonda Sparks, Marsha Bay, Cassie Reeves, Jennifer Roberts and Elly Short were all charged with two felony counts of manufacturing and possession of a controlled substance.

Franklin County Sheriff Larry Plott said they were using one of the most common methods to make meth.

"They were using the 'shake and bake' system, very dangerous," Plott said. "It can be a plastic drink bottle or water bottle and they put the ingredients in."

Common household items and prescription drugs were found at the residence. All that was left at the scene Friday were three immobile vehicles parked outside a vacant trailer, and a brother wondering how this happened.

Officials with the Franklin County Sheriff's Department said the rate of meth-related arrests has steadily increased over the past five years.
