JSU's Kyle Bluestein Named OVC Freshman of the Year

Jacksonville State's Kyle Bluestein was named the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year and four Gamecocks were named to the OVC All-Conference baseball teams at the annual OVC Awards Banquet on Tuesday evening.

The awards are voted on by league head coaches and sports information directors and were awarded on the eve of the 2009 OVC Baseball Championships.

Bluestein becomes the third Jacksonville State player to earn the OVC Freshman of the Year award and it marks the second straight season the Gamecocks have earned the honor. Bluestein leads the team with a .382 batting average with 17 doubles, eight home runs and 39 RBI. Todd Cunningham was named OVC Freshman of the Year in 2008 and Donovan Hand earned the honor in 2005.

Junior Bill Henke was named first-team as a relief pitcher after leading the Ohio Valley Conference and setting the school record with nine saves. The Hoover, Ala., native has a 2-1 overall record with a 1.50 earned run average and has only allowed one hit vs OVC opponents this season after posting a perfect 0.00 ERA vs the league.

Junior Daniel Adamson was named second-team as an outfielder after leading the Gamecocks with 10 homeruns and 53 RBI. The Springville, Ala., native is batting .311 on the season and earned OVC Player of the Week honors after helping the Gamecocks earn their fourth consecutive win over a nationally ranked team last month.

Sam Eberle was one of two Gamecocks named to the All-Freshman squad, joining Bluestein. Eberle, from Chattanooga, Tenn., is tied for second on the team with nine home runs and has 37 RBI on the season. He was also named OVC Player of the Week in April after slugging five home runs, including tying the JSU school record with three home runs vs Kennesaw State on April 14th.

Jacksonville State will start Austin Lucas (6-2, 4.43 ERA) against third-seed Morehead State as the Gamecocks opens OVC Tournament play on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The game will be carried live on the Gamecock Sports Network and live stats will be available at JSUGamecockSports.com
