-- Despite turning in its highest round of the 2009 season, the University of North Alabama golf team stands tied for 10th in a 20-team field after the first round of the 2009 NCAA Division II Golf Championships. The Lions shot a combined 308, 24 strokes over par, with David Gies 75 standing as the team's best round of the day. Brett Munson had a 76, Ty Chandler 77, Jake Greer 80 and Wes Smith 84.
In cold and windy conditions, most other teams didn't fare any better than UNA in the opening round.
Barry and Sonoma State lead the team standings, both with nine over par 293 totals.
The four-day event resumes on Wednesday.
UNA is making its fourth straight appearance in the Division II Championships and ninth overall. The Lions tied for second nationally in 2008.
