HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Huntsville is Alabama's fastest-growing metropolitan area, the city is ranked 27th nationally.

Joe Vallely, Director of Economic Development for the City of Huntsville, attributes properly managing population and job growth to maintaining and upgrading infrastructure, like buildings and roadways, quality of life, and good, basic services.

"Huntsville is a job creator for the State of Alabama, there's no question we've done that going on two decades now," said Vallely.

Vallely says Redstone Arsenal, NASA, Marshall Space Flight Center and many others are drivers of the types of quality jobs in Huntsville.

Ethan Hadley, Vice President of Economic Development for the Huntsville-Madison County Chamber of Commerce says Huntsville competes with the two top cities on the census list.

"Austin [Texas], is number one in population growth, we're almost the same as Austin in job growth, and we're ahead of Raleigh Durham [North Carolina]."

There are about 300,000 people in Huntsville.

Huntsville ranked 27th nationally with a population growth of 2.4%.

That's comes out to about 7,200 people moving to the Rocket City in one year.
