FLORENCE, AL (WAFF)- As energy prices continue to rise, many people are looking for ways to cut costs.

At the University of North Alabama, new federal money is going to help them do just that.

They got a check Monday for almost one million dollars.  All together the university has received almost 2 million dollars to make their campus green.

Construction has already begun.

Several classrooms on UNA's campus are empty.  The hallways are silent, and yellow caution tape has been put in place to prevent students from coming in.

Construction on phase one of the green initiative has already begun in Keller Hall.

The green initiative is going to save the university a lot of money.

"Our overall ambition is to save 15% in total energy costs for UNA," said William Cale, UNA's President.

This federal money will help replace windows, change out old air units, and create energy by using solar panels.

"Everything that will be replaced," said Dr. Pirscilla Holland, UNA's Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs, "Will be replaced with more energy efficient types of things."

The changes are needed.  The average age of buildings on UNA's campus is 70-years-old.

"That doesn't count the pre-civil war structures," said Cale.

Keller Hall will be completed first.  Then renovations will take place at Bibb Graves Hall, Stevens Hall, Lafayette Hall, and Floyd Hall.

"We are not taking any money going to academic programs to complete the work," said Cale.

Along with saving money, the improvements will make a better learning environment for students.

"I think it's a real good idea that they are going to fix all these old buildings," said Megan Morris, UNA Freshmen.

These changes will make UNA one of the most green campuses in the state.

Construction on Keller Hall will take about a year to complete.  University leaders say they will continue to search for more money to make their campus greener.
