My Take - Tax Time Scam

As we near the tax deadline, it's important for all of us to be on the lookout for scams.  Last year people around the country were scammed out of millions of dollars, in what was one of the largest tax scams in history. Scam artists tell people they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are threatened with arrest, fines, deportation or suspension of a business or driver's licen...More >>

    My Take - Helmets Help

If you've lived in Alabama or the south for any period of time, you've become accustomed to the words "safe place." When tornadoes are eminent, meteorologists such as the WAFF 48 First Alert Storm Team will tell you go to your "safe place" immediately. While you're in your "safe place" you'll best be served if you have your cell phone or Ipad with your free WAFF 48 Weather App downloaded. My Take - Severe Weather

The unfortunate reality is that severe weather season is just around the corner.  Hopefully this won't be an active season. We want to let you know about a policy we have at WAFF when a severe weather warning is issued inside our viewing area.  The policy states that the WAFF First Alert weather team will stay in continuous coverage until the warning has passed.  WAFF is committed to the entire Tennessee Valley to keep you alert to severe weather that could impact your ...More >>

    My Take - Looking Back

It's time to revisit Alabama's look back period and how it impacts those arrested and charged with DUIs in our state. In Alabama those convicted of DUI's are charged with misdemeanors on their first, second and third offense.  Penalties escalate with each offense to include fines, license suspension and jail time.  A fourth DUI conviction, and yes there are people that haven't learned their lesson or more likely just doesn't care, will result in a Class C felony includi...More >>

    My Take - Free Press

I read a comment the other day that really got my attention.  It said "One of the truest signs of maturity is the ability to disagree with someone while still remaining respectful". I read that and realized how important that is during these political times!  America is so polarized right now that no matter what you say there's bound to be someone get downright nasty with you.  The president and the press has had a long history during our democracy. ...More >>

    My Take - Minimum Requirements

Two north Alabama lawmakers would like to make it a requirement that Alabama students pass a citizenship exam in order to graduate high school. Senator Arthur Orr and Representative Terri Collins, both from Decatur, are concerned about students having a "deficit" of knowledge regarding our country's history and government. As proposed, the bill would require Alabama students to answer a minimum of 60 questions out of 100 correctly in order to pass. These are the questions th...More >>

My Take - Less is More

A couple of weeks ago President Trump signed an executive order with the intent to cut regulations "massively" for small businesses.  White House officials say that in the future if a government agency wants to add a new regulation they must identify two to take out.  They're calling it the "one in, two out plan."  For those that might be concerned about the reduction in federal regulations, you should not worry.  At last check, the Federal Regi...More >>

My Take - Smoking and Healthcare Legislation

The proposed purchase of Reynolds American by British American Tobacco for 49 billion dollars reminds us that smoking is still a huge business in America. That number pales, though, compared to the 300 billion dollar a year cost of smoking in the U. S., with nearly 170 billion of that in medical care for adults. The effects of secondhand smoke aside, if you want to smoke, that's your right. But when an issue of this financial magnitude affects the economy of the nation, we should have l...More >>

    My Take - Republicans Turn

First steps have now been taken to repeal the Affordable Care Act known as Obamacare. The Republican majority in the U.S. House and Senate have a Republican president, and they're moving ahead with their promise to repeal it.Yet, we can't afford to simply go back to the pre-Obamacare system. It was ineffective and expensive. New healthcare legislation must be carefully crafted and will certainly require compromises among all parties, doctors, hospitals, insurance companies, those who ...More >>
