Birmingham Judge Announces Retirement

Sept. 5 - The Birmingham judge who presided over the 1963 church bombing trials will soon call it quits. Circuit Judge James Garrett is planning to retire this fall.

Earlier this year he presided of the trial of former Klansman Bobby Frank Cherry. Cherry was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church. He also presided over the case against former Klansman Thomas Blanton, Jr. last year.

Garret’s last day as an active judge will be November 2nd.
