Parents should use caution with inflatable pools

Just in time for summer, there's a new campaign to highlight the dangers of inflatable swimming pools.

Drowning is the number one cause of death in children ages 5 and under.

Experts say these tragedies are preventable.

While inflatable pools are bigger, better and cheaper than before, the Consumer Product Safety Commission says they're posing an increasing threat to children.

"In the old days, we had the six inch pools we emptied every night that almost anyone could stand up in. Now we're looking at pools with twenty four inches or more of water in them," says Hal Stratton, Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Adults tend to focus more on the dangers of in-ground pools but statistics show the number of inflatable pool drownings nearly doubled last year.

The first layer of protection is adult supervision. Other precautions include a fence to lock out children and a door alarm.
