Training could help save police officer's life

Suppose a police officer is shot while answering a fight call or serving a warrant. Every second counts toward saving the officer's life and moving him or her to safety.

This training demonstration shows a paramedic, playing the role of a police officer, slumped over in the front seat of his patrol car. The pretend officer is hurt and needs immediate medical attention.

"He's been wounded. He's shot," screams the training instructor.

The situation is dangerous. The officer's back-up stays low, armed and on the look-out. They make sure the area is safe for medics to come in and quickly remove the hurt officer from his unit.

"Go. Going up. Turn around. Move," says Pelham Firefighter Don Green. Don Green, a Lieutenant firefighter with Pelham Fire Department, trains with their police department's tactical team. Green says the drills he's learned in Decatur hit close to home.

"It crossed my mind several times that it could be one of my guys. How would I react that gut feeling that's my buddy laying there," says Green.

Green's partner, Mike Reid, knows the skills he's learning now could save a life later.

"This could be, I could be in this situation very easily," says Pelham Firefighter Mike Reid.

Terry Wilburn drove 7 hours from Little Rock, Arkansas to the Flint Training Center in Decatur. He says the more intense the training the better his skills will be in the field.

"It will become like second nature to you,' says Arkansas EMT Terry Wilburn.

The class was made up of medics from North Alabama, Birmingham, and Arkansas. They'll continue training through the rest of the week.
