Hurricane Katrina has left behind massive devastation and destruction. One Louisiana couple says the storm couldn't stop one of the happiest moments of their life.
Jennifer and Cesar Sousa left their home in New Orleans, Louisiana the second they heard Hurricane Katrina was bearing down.
'It's tragic, frightening. We hope we have a home to go back to,' says Jennifer Sousa.
Especially now. Jennifer gave birth Monday to he couple's first child, a 5-pound 11-ounce baby boy. Claudio Sage Sousa wasn't due to arrive until Saturday at a hospital in Louisiana. But his parents had to leave. And little Claudio couldn't wait any longer.
'My water broke in the middle of the night. Finally at 7 in the morning we decided to take the chance and drive we did so very quickly,' says Jennifer.
The Sousas drove to a friends house. Their friends rushed the expecting couple to Athens-Limestone Hospital. Jennifer was admitted around 1:30 Monday afternoon. Claudio made his appearance 2 hours later.
'It was the most dramatic birth we could ever imagine.'
On a day the Sousas and their neighbors in New Orleans will never forget.
'We're lucky because we have something very joyful to concentrate on right now,' says Jennifer.
Like taking care of their son. The Sousas left behind all their baby supplies, expecting to be home in time for his birth. Nurses at Athens-Limestone Hospital donated baby clothes, diapers, and a suitcase. The Sousas aren't sure when they'll head home to New Orleans. They're also not sure what kind of damage has been done to their home.
