A Fort Payne historic landmark narrowly escapes tragedy after being struck by lightning.
Built in 1935 this is the historic DeKalb Theater in downtown Fort Payne. Used as more than a theater, it's a concert hall, banquet room, and general meeting place. In 1994 the theater was almost torn down. That's when the city bought it and restored it to what it is now.
Monday night, the theater was almost lost again. It was struck by lightning, but amazingly the lightning only hit the front sign. You can see where some of the neon lights were blown off, but beyond that little damage was done. Lovers of this theater are counting their blessings that it didn't sustain worse.
"They were in here with hoses and it was quite the scare. It would be a terrible loss to this city to lose this building, it's owned by the city, it would be a terrible loss," theatre manager Frank Humphreys says.

C'mon, play. You know you want to. The boss will never know.
