PITTSBURGH (AP) - Justin Upton smashed his 24th home run of the season to spoil Andrew McCutchen's return as the Atlanta Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-3 Tuesday night. Upton's three-run homer off Francisco Liriano in the third broke things open early.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) - Corey Peters battled doubts about his future in the NFL after he tore his Achilles tendon late last season. Eight months later, the defensive tackle is back on the practice fields and says he's expecting to play when the Atlanta Falcons open their regular season on Sept. 7 against the Saints.

ATLANTA (AP) - As coach Trent Miles sees it, the Georgia State Panthers have nowhere to go but up this year. Georgia State went 0-12 last season, its first under Miles, as the Panthers moved into the Sun Belt Conference. It was only the fourth year of football at the downtown Atlanta university.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Southern University's head track and field coach, Brian Johnson, is leaving. He's accepted a position as the assistant track coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Georgia. WAFB-TV reports Southern officials said Tuesday that Johnson will be the sprints and jumps coach and oversee recruiting for Georgia.
