MCEWEN, Tenn. (AP) - A preliminary investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' National Response Team has determined that a deadly explosion at a McEwen ammunition plant was accidental. An ATF spokesman said it will now be up to the Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration to determine fault and whether there were any safety violations at the plant.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A Nashville woman has been sentenced to two years in prison for defrauding the Veterans Administration of more than $364,000. Birdie Anderson received a grant for $80,600 in 2007 to house homeless veterans for at least seven years.
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) - A bicycle and pedestrian trail linking Johnson City and Elizabethton now has its own song. The Tweetsie Trail is being built on the abandoned ET&WNC rail line, formerly travelled by steam locomotives. The trains got the nickname "tweetsie" from local residents because of their shrill whistles.
DANDRIDGE, Tenn. (AP) - Jefferson County Sheriff Bud McCoig says deputies did nothing wrong in the three inmate deaths at the county jail since January. McCoig held a press conference on Friday to discuss the deaths. He said his deputies tried to save the lives of the deceased inmates.
