A short drive away in Middle Tennessee, you'll find a campground where things are done a little differently. They don't wear clothes!
"We do the same things here as people at a normal campground, only we don't have clothes on," says Elaine Rawlings.
Every year, thousands come to Rock Haven Lodge to be naked. They stay in trailers or RV's, swim in the pool and play darts - all without clothes on.
Owner Nancy Volak is the only person you'll see wearing clothes, but that's just when she's working. For guests, clothing is not optional. The nudists come in all ages, some retirees, but most in their 40's. And every year more are coming to try it out.
Volak says the first time can be nerve racking. "I c all it the twenty minutes of terror. Nobody can help you through it. For twenty minutes you're going to think, 'what am I doing?'" She says almost everyone gets through it because it's a comfortable family environment, not sexual.
Don Rawlings agrees, "Y ou're more aware of people as a person, not what clothes they have on or whatever."
Being nude does present some problems says Rawlings."The general rules of a nudist resort, you don't have to be uncomfortable. If it's cold, put on clothes. With heat, if you've got a sunburn, then it's okay to put on a t-shirt."
His wife concurs, "If you're cooking bacon and it's spattering, you may want to have a shirt on."
Otherwise, Volak says, life is pretty normal.
"It's great, give it a try."Comments Terms of Use: We welcome your participation in our community. Please keep your comments civil and on point.
