Police: Woman accidentally shot while untangling extension cord

HILLSBORO, AL (WAFF) - Lawrence County Sheriff's Investigators have preliminarily ruled that the death of Brenda Strickland Terry is the result of an accidental shooting.

Investigators, with the assistance of the Alabama Bureau of Investigations, began investigating Terry's death Monday night.

She died shortly before midnight from injuries resulting from a gunshot wound to the face.

After investigating the scene and receiving the preliminary results of an autopsy conducted by the Alabama Department of Forensic Science, Investigators believe that the shooting was accidental.

Officials believe Terry was accidentally shot while trying to untangle an extension cord.

Sheriff Gene Mitchell said the cord was wrapped around a camping tent that was stored in Terry's garage.

A small caliber pistol had been left inside the tent when it was put up for storage.

Mitchell said that while attempting to get the extension cord untangled, the pistol accidentally discharged striking Terry in the head.

The investigation is still ongoing and there are still some test results that have yet to come back

Sheriff Mitchell said based on the evidence, investigators feel confident the death is accidental.
