HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Bond has been set for the 14-year-old suspect in the Discovery Middle School shooting.

A Madison County judge decided Friday to try Hammad Memon as an adult and gave him a $75,000 bond with the condition that he surrender his passport. The teen's family is from Pakistan and all hold dual citizenship in the United States and United Kingdom.

While in jail, Memon will be held in solitary confinement, and he will be under suicide watch. Memon is charged with murdering fellow student Todd Brown during a class change February 5th, 2010.

Memon has been held at the Neaves-Davis Detention Center since the shooting.

Memon's attorney Bruce Gardner said he'd hoped for one of two outcomes.

"One that this court would enter an order immediately transferring this young man to a psychiatric facility where he clearly belongs or two not treating him as an adult," said Gardner.

Neither of those requests were granted.

Madison County Assistant District Attorney Tim Gann said he emphasized certain aspects of the case to sway the judge's opinion.

"The main focus that we had was the nature of the charge, of course the seriousness of the murder and of course, trying to protect the community," explained Gann.

Both the victim's and the suspect's families were present at the hearing.

Gardner said he will appeal the decision.

Huntsville attorney Mark McDaniel represents Todd Brown's family. He said the decision to try Memon as an adult is a just decision.

"It is a situation where no parent should have their child go to school and be violently murdered in front of many other students," said McDaniel. "This impacted every student in the hallway, every student in Madison County, every student in the state of Alabama."

"We will work to cooperate and collaborate with the District Attorney and the police department to help them do their job and anything they may need from us," said Madison City Schools Superintendent Dr. Dee Fowler. "I think this everybody is looking for this to come to closure."
