HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) – The Huntsville Fraternal Order of Police is asking a judge to sentence a man to death for killing a Huntsville police officer.
A jury previously recommended life in prison for Kenneth Shipp, the man convicted of killing officer Eric Freeman.
Freeman was shot and killed in 2007 at a traffic stop on Bailey Cove Road.
Shipp's attorneys admit he was drunk and taking prescription medication at the time.
Members of the Fraternal Order of Police gathered at city hall Thursday, along side Freeman's widow Leslie to ask the judge to consider death despite any argument during trial from Shipp's loved ones.
"[Shipp's] family was allowed to get up and plead for leniency. They were allowed to say he had changed since he had been in jail. Those changes are good. They still don't bring William Eric Freeman back," said FOP President, Bill Davis.
FOP will deliver letters asking the judge to consider death as Shipp's punishment.
Attorney General Troy King is expected to attend Shipp's sentencing set for March 23.
