Winter storm slams Huntsville

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A thin band of snow showers moved all the way across North Alabama, dropping heavy snow and forcing schools to close early.

It was a picture perfect surprise that caught most everyone, including our own meteorologist, off guard.

"It was just one of those situations where the weather developed fast and the forecast had to be updated what we were seeing right then and there," said Jeff Castle.

While it looked pretty, driving in it wasn't.

cars slid off roads, many left to be towed later.

Works crews were out in no time salting and sanding.

Much of 565 closed down.

Other roads remained open, like Bankhead Parkway over Monte Sano, drivers took caution around hairpin turns.

"we were expecting nothing and now it's snowing like it never has before," said motorist Sarah Burgess. "It's beautiful, but it's keeping me from going home, I'm stopping here cause I don't know if I can get over the mountain."

The fun came to a sudden stop after an hour or so, leaving nothing but slush, mud and a few wrecked cars behind.
